Okay I got your attention. I know it was a cheap shot but we all know that as we age something happens…either our standards decrease or what really excites us tends to make us fall off the deep end.
Put me in the second category.
So who is Nina Olsen?
I’m glad you asked.
Nina Olsen is the nation’s top taxpayer advocate. The taxpayer advocate is an independent organization within the IRS. The purpose of the taxpayer advocate service is to be your voice at the IRS.
Last week, Nina issued a report that urged Congress to simplify the tax code. She went so far as to state that the tax code imposes an “unconscionable burden” on taxpayers and that individuals and business spend 6.1 billion hours complying with the tax filing requirements.
Do I hear an “Amen!!!”?
In the last 11 years Congress has made 5,000 changes to the tax code. In fact, the tax code totals about 4 million words.
Now how does this compare to other documents?
Let’s look at the Holy Bible.
Would it be a safe bet that if you wanted eternal life, you should know the bible?
In fact what’s more important, the salvation of your soul or your annual tax return?
Number of words in the bible…774,746 (593,493 in the Old Testament/181,253 in the New Testament),
Now what is easier to read?
I know – tough question – The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7) or Passive Activities (IRC Section 469).
I’ll take the words of Jesus any day.
Bottom line – being an honest, law abiding citizen should not be so difficult.
Thanks Nina – hopefully your words did not fall on deaf ears.
